The 2022 PAGEY ELLIOTT PUZZLE EXCHANGE

Below are the eleven 2022 Pagey Elliott Puzzle Exchange puzzles. Each participant met each other through "Studio Nights -- an online video conference call to compare progress, get to know each other, and ask questions about making puzzles. Another addition was for long-distance participants who couldn't make it to the Parley, but were still able to participate by sending their completed set of puzzles to the event. A full set has been added to our growing collection of PEPE puzzles at the Strong Museum of Play.

Statement: I made a puzzle that is a tessellation -- it was purely meant to rest your mind and encourage creative shape-building. The puzzling community took that idea and put it together in ways I never even thought possible! The spirit of that puzzle inspired this Bonsai, with tessellating leaves that can be switched around to create any form you can think of, in any season. Let your fingers find your zen, but beware the tricky trunk!

By fitting together a sheet of pre-cut tessellating pieces, Janell can watercolor them in batches.

There is magic in that soil! Little microbe engraves are highlighted with shimmery watercolors.

Wood Worm

Maker: Chas Bridge at Puzzled by Chas
Email: [email protected]
Size: 2 3/8" Tall x 21" Long       Pieces: 84

Note included with puzzle:

As a carpenter, I celebrate the beauty of wood by gluing veneer to both sides of a puzzle. This lets me explore many vertical options: free standing like this wood worm, hanging on a thread, skewered on a dowel, hexagonal wall and many more.

I start with an attractive pattern of veneer on a 7 1/4" square of MDF. After cutting it into three wavy edge strips, I cut the joints on a miter saw. I cut everything else on my old Craftsman scroll saw as three separate panels. First I cut a short piece from each end of the center panel and glue the miter joints. Then I cut each panel into two pieces with a long continuous cut. I separate the two halves and cut them into individual pieces to make an interesting and hopefully misleading "flow".

It's happened to me, and likely it's happened to you. That LAST piece of the puzzle has gone missing, and you spend hours searching for it, nary to find a thing.

As I was contemplating the puzzle to create for this year's exchange, I was wondering where all the lost piece's go. That's when the idea of a puzzle with pieces being "squirreled away" popped into my head. To tell the story of a sneaky squirrel, I felt I needed more than one image. A double-sided puzzle seemed to be the answer, so I needed to figure out how to make one.

Utilizing digital art tools, I created two images and began experimenting. Aligning the images when mounting so that color line cutting would be effective on both sides was difficult. I utilized a straight edge and lots of eye power to get them very close. Also, challenging was the "whiskers" that the blade leaves on the bottom side of the puzzle. I found that placing transfer paper on it before cutting reduced whiskering significantly.

I am quite pleased with how the puzzle turned out. To fully grasp the humor of "Squirreled Away" the assembler needs to look at both sides.

Size: ~7" x7"      Pieces: 230

Note included with puzzle:
I wanted to push myself with this series of puzzles by using lots of tiny drop outs, cutting thin sections, and adding layers, which I hadn't done before. Several of the drop outs in the design were too small and numerous to cut in a 7" puzzle, so keeping them as similar as possible was quite challenging.

Dutch flower paintings, such as this painting by Spaendonck from the Rijksmuseum, provided a good opportunity to explore different elements of puzzle design.

Title: "Humming at Sunset"
Created for the 2022 Pagey Elliott Jigsaw Puzzle Exchange - Puzzle Parley 2022
Hand cut by myself (Collage using my paintings)

Hello,
For my first time at the Puzzle Parley, I wanted to create a puzzle that represents who I am.
The Art:
- The Hummingbird is my signature piece in all my puzzles. A hummingbird because the day I was questioning myself about jumping in this puzzle adventure, a hummingbird showed up at my window, like a messenger saying "do it" 🥰
- the art is by myself, the hummingbird shape is from my own drawing. This art piece is made out of 4 of my paintings that I printed, cut into pieces to create a collage that is the final Art of this puzzle. My original art is a 11x14 collage.

The Cut:
- This puzzle represents where I am, as a cutter, right now. Cut with uneven edges, few special shapes, following some lines of the art, a puzzle in a puzzle, and my Hummingbird signature piece.

               *********************

Who I am:
- I am originally from France, living in the USA since 21 years.
I was a puzzler for years, before buying my scroll saw in 2021.
I wanted to create puzzles for my mom who has arthritis pain in her hands and cannot grab cardboard puzzle pieces.
I'm creating using art from unknown artists, supporting them. They are from France, USA, or recently from Ukraine. I also use my own art/pictures images.
And, I really like to find unique images to create Only One Unique puzzle.

- For every puzzle that I cut, I like to follow the flow of the art in front of me. I like to create puzzles in puzzles, and I love cutting push-fit puzzles.
Sometimes including special shapes too, sometimes with drop out.

Creating puzzles for all ages. 🧩💗✨
Thank you,
(signed Isabelle)

Joe Seymour of Dep Qua Puzzles

Size: 7" x 7"    Pieces: 96
Picture
Note included with puzzle:
This watercolor painting was a part of a series called Koi  by Willy Gomez. This copy was available for download, so I printed it and made a puzzle for myself a couple of years ago. I knew that it would be a great choice for the Pagey Elliott Puzzle Exchange, so I did not show it to anyone. I needed to drill over400 holes in order to cut all the drop-outs needed to complete the Exchange puzzles. I hope you enjoy it!
