Statement:
I created this puzzle for the koi pond that I wish I could have. I wanted to combine different materials and techniques, such as watercolor-on-primed-wood and hand-dyed acrylic. The pond critter layer is filled with all the life one would find in a real koi pond, and the seasonal extras are made with laser cut watercolored paper. I made it extra tricky by having all of the pieces be double sided!

 THERE WAS AN OLD LADY . . .

Maker: Shay Charmichael at Shay's Puzzle Workshop
Website link: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ShayzPuzzleWorkshop
Artwork: Leslie Alison Murray
Size: about 10"x7" Piece count: about 120
Picture
A whimsical puzzle based on the nursery rhyme "There was an old lady"

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!
. . .

(last verse)
She swallowed the cow to catch the goat,
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’s dead
There was an old lady who swallowed a horse;

She’s dead, of course!
The larger animals are on the top edge of the puzzle, but a very interesting figural in the center has a fly inside a spider inside a bird. Note the use of accent cuts to provide details of the spider and the fly. Also cleverly done is the fly, which Shay has signed and dated, holds together two of the three pieces making up the spider. The irregular bottom boundary and all the interlocking "?" as to why she swallowed the fly...
