The Yankee (or White Elephant) Swap

Picture
Yankee Swap puzzlers. Is this a keeper or should I swap?
Many of the past Parleys have included a fun-filled informal puzzle swap on Friday evenings after dinner. Participants bring a high-quality jigsaw puzzle of their choice, wrapped or in a gift bag so that the contents is a surprise! The puzzle must be non-cardboard, complete and in good shape, worth between $40 - $100, and one you are willing to part with. Puzzle Crafters can use one they have made even if they would charge more than $100 for it.

Swap Guidelines
  • High-quality jigsaw puzzle
  • Non-cardboard
  • Complete
  • In good condition
  • Value: $40 - $100 (see above note on Puzzle Crafters)
  • Wrapped or in a gift bag to hide details

How does the Swap work?

There are many variants of the basic rules, below are the ones we usually go with.
  • Each participant will randomly choose a number to determine order of choosing.
  • The #1 is the best number to have, since you get to see everything unwrapped before making the last trade.
  • Starting with #1, participants choose a wrapped puzzle to open, but without touching, shaking, or peeking inside at packages! The chosen puzzle is unwrapped  and displayed to everyone, and the details of title, maker, number of pieces, etc. are announced.
  • Next, #2 will pick out a puzzle from the remaining wrapped ones, unwrap it and read the details out loud. Then choose whether to keep it or steal/swap with #1's puzzle. The swap-ee must comply!
  • The swap continues with each numbered participant, until everyone has opened a puzzle and had a chance to steal a previously opened puzzle.
  • Why #1 is the best? Becuase they get to make the last swap/theft, once all have been opened!
  • Puzzles can be swapped any number of times. Beware, the puzzle you steal can always be stolen from you!
